宁芬堡宫是选帝侯斐迪南•玛里亚(Ferdinand Maria)夫妇在1664年邀请了一批意大利建筑师和艺术家建造，以庆祝王室继承人——子爵马克西米里安二世(Maximilian II Emanuel)的出生;同时建造的还有同为巴洛克式的铁阿提纳教堂。值得一提的是，维特尔斯巴赫王朝的巴伐利亚国王——路德维希二世曾出生在该建筑的房间中。整座宫殿坐西朝东，由一幢幢方形楼房连结成一组建筑物，正面长达600米;主楼雄伟壮观，展开的两翼对称和谐，远远望去主次分明。宫殿前一潭清水，天鹅野鸭，冲天的喷泉，浓荫掩映的笔直人工河，构成一幅宁静典雅的风景图。
