这是一首咏七夕的节序词，起句展示七夕独有的抒情氛围，“巧”与“恨”,则将七夕人间“乞巧”的主题及“牛郎、织女”故事的悲剧性特征点明，练达而凄美。借牛郎织女悲欢离合的故事，歌颂坚贞诚挚的爱情。结句“两情若是久长时，又岂在朝朝暮暮”最有境界，这两句既指牛郎、织女的爱情模式的特点，又表述了作者的爱情观，是高度凝练的名言佳句。这首词因而也就具有了跨时代、跨国度的审美价值和艺术品位。

译文赏析

中国诗词讲究的是对仗工整，文字简洁而意境深远。英文古诗偏重节奏和韵律，特别是句尾用词的押韵。例如第一节当中的art和 heart 的押韵; maid, jade,和fade 三个词的韵脚押[eid]这个音。

金风玉露其实就是指代秋天，金风golden wind; 玉露dew of jade. “相逢”一词，他采用了动词“embrace”,When Autumn’s Golden Wind embraces Dew of Jade, 保留了原文的美感也让西方读者明白其意境。

鹊桥，在我们的语境中是很有诗意的画面，我们自然会想起牛郎织女的爱情故事。但喜鹊magpie 在英语文化中却并不是美好的象征。为了避免文化差异引出的误解与美感丢失，许渊冲先生将“鹊桥”隐去而用homeward way代替，意思是“归家的路”，这样也没有丢失掉“鹊桥”在词句中的实际意义。

“两情若是久长时，又岂在朝朝暮暮”成为传颂经典，If love between both sides can last for aye, Why need they stay together night and day? 其中，last for aye是古英语，aye意思是“永远”，也就是forever.
