　　摘要：《红楼梦》是举世公认的*古典小说巅峰之作。《红楼梦》的译本中，最为著名的英译本有英国汉学家代维?霍克斯（David Hawkes）和约翰?闵福德（John Minford）的全译本The Story of the Stone，和我国翻译家杨宪益与戴乃迭夫妇的全译本A Dream of Red Mansions。本文以纽马克的语义翻译和交际翻译为指导，对两种《红楼梦》英译版本中俗语的翻译进行对比分析，从而帮助理解两种译本的语言特点，以及两种翻译方法在具体实践中的应用。

　　一、语义翻译和交际翻译

　　彼得?纽马克（Peter Newmark）是英国著名的翻译理论家，他在其著作《翻译问题探讨》（Approaches to Translation）中首次提出了交际翻译和语义翻译的概念。纽马克指出，交际翻译指译文对目的语读者产生的效果应尽量等同于原作对源语读者产生的效果，语义翻译则指在译入语语义和句法结构允许的前提下，尽可能准确地再现原文上下文意义。（Newmark，38-62）交际翻译强调译入语，其目的更多地在于传递信息，让读者去思考、去感受，而语义翻译强调源语言，以原文作者为中心，力求保持原作的语言特点与表达方式，准确地传达出原文的上下文意义。从定义上看，两者的最大区别在于交际翻译重效果轻形式，而语义翻译则重形式轻效果。
